There was a tremendous ‘buzz’ around the school campus on Friday last as three past pupils, Kieran Joyce, Walter Walsh and Joe Lyng, called in with the Liam MacCarthy cup. The three, who represented the school with great distinction iin their time here, were given heroes’ welcome by the students many of who come from the same local parishes as the hurling stars. Indeed Kieran has a brother in 3rd year while Walter and Joe both have cousins still attending the school. The men could not have been more gracious in meeting all the requests for autographs and photographs – one remarked that he may have done more writing on Friday last than in all his previous years in the school!
It is always a very pleasant task to welcome back any past pupils to the school, the more so in circumstances such as last Friday where outstanding achievement is being celebrated. A striking feature of the players’ visit was the uncomplicated humility of these young men, unaffected by their success, mingling with their own community without airs or graces, a striking contrast to much of the current celebrity culture where the most many of those ‘celebrated’ can lay claim to is, ‘famous for being famous’. We are very grateful to the the three men for taking the time to call in and spend some time with us. For any of our past pupils it is not a pre-requisite to have an All ireland medal to drop back in; we are always delighted to see you call .
