New Ross Rewards to bring a sense of civic pride to our Community
Good Counsel College is delighted to be associated with the New Ross Rewards – a ‘give back’ community initiative involving over seventy local businesses together with the schools and clubs of the town and its hinterlands. Supported by An Garda Síochána, it was formally launched by Superintendent John McDonald by the banks of the River Barrow over the weekend.
The bright spark idea of local business man Billy Ryan, who has coordinated the project to date; sees traders and service providers utilise the rewards process to highlight the many wonderful everyday deeds done and achievements won by the citizens of the district. New Ross native and dentist, Adrian Dillon commented “Everyday, members of the public, our customers and friends, do good deeds and accomplish so much but go unnoticed. New Ross Rewards is a vehicle to thank and honour those nominated and chosen by their peers. All the entities involved are delighted to sponsor the €10,000 euro total prize fund. The benefit is twofold in lifting spirits and building a deeper sense of community and civic pride”.
Superintendent John McDonald said “While there are many award ceremonies throughout the year by various groups, there are very few if any rewards given. It’s refreshing to see the New Ross Rewards business group, school principals and club officials join together for this project. Local residents will be rewarded for many reasons from simply doing their everyday tasks with pride, volunteering, fundraising or even random acts of kindness. Contributing and playing your part is what makes life, family and community work in harmony”.
Interested clubs, schools, societies and individuals in the New Ross District are asked to join in the initiative by following the project online at www.facebook.com/newrossrewards from Tuesday. 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone but the group looks forward to rolling out the project and developing a presence online at www.newrossrewards.ie which will showcase the spirit of our community and the sponsors involved.
Weekly nominations can be submitted by emailing: newrossrewards@gmail.com
The inaugural star reward was presented to 6th year CBS Student, Kamila Zwidryn by Superintendent John Mc Donald, New Ross Garda Station. Her nominator described Kamila as a diligent, ambitious and focused young woman who manages to combine her considerable workload with a generosity of spirit toward others. She has coped in a very positive way during Covid-19 lockdown by simply getting on with it by devoting herself to her studies and duties at home. A fine example of how young people in general contribute to their family and society.
Highlights planned include a special reward to the 1st Baby born in the New Ross District in 2021 then each following week a member will present one local person with €100 cash reward. The four commercial banks operating in New Ross will also reward a nominated club or group each quarter while a number of €2,000 scholarships will be conferred on two students going to third- level studies in September. The New Ross Standard, as official media partner, will feature the reward recipients in their weekly publication throughout the year. Commenting at the launch, Solicitor Declan Joyce said “I hope many more will join the initiative over the coming months and on behalf of New Ross Rewards -good wishes to everyone for a happy and safe Christmas. Remember to shop local this year too”.
